BUILD OVERVIEW
Modern Suspension Meets Legendary 7.3 Power
Modern Suspension Meets Legendary 7.3 Power
Every once in a while, a build comes through the shop that completely transforms a truck from the ground up. That's exactly what happened with Woodson's 2001 Ford F-350 Super Duty XL.
The goal was simple: build a truck that rides better, drives better, stops better, and has the power to match—all while keeping the legendary 7.3L Powerstroke under the hood.
The biggest part of this build was Phase 1 of a complete front coil conversion. The factory leaf spring suspension was replaced with a modern coilover setup using a 2017-2020 Dana Super 60 front axle and premium ICON Vehicle Dynamics suspension components.
A major piece of this conversion came from Texas Vintage Trucks, who designed and fabricated the custom coil spring buckets that made the swap possible. These custom brackets allow the newer Super Duty suspension to fit the 2001 chassis while maintaining a clean, factory-quality appearance. Their fabrication played a huge role in bringing this conversion to life.
To complete the suspension, we installed an ICON Radius Arm System, 2.5 Series Remote Reservoir Coilovers, adjustable track bar, dual steering stabilizers, rear CDCV piggyback shocks, and progressive rear leaf springs. The result is a truck that offers a smoother ride, improved handling, and far more confidence on and off the road.
Under the hood, the 7.3L Powerstroke received several upgrades focused on dependable power and drivability. A KC Turbos Gen 3 Stage 1 Turbo, Full Force Diesel Stage 1.5 Injectors, regulated return fuel system, S&B Cold Air Intake, upgraded intercooler, custom tuning, and supporting fuel and turbo components work together to provide reliable performance whether the truck is towing, daily driving, or hitting the trail.
To complement the added power, we also installed a 5-inch turbo-back exhaust, helping the engine breathe more efficiently while giving the truck the sound every 7.3 owner loves.
Braking performance was upgraded with a complete 2020+ Super Duty brake conversion, including larger rotors, calipers, hub bearings, and stainless braided brake lines. These improvements provide significantly better stopping power to match the truck's new capabilities.
To finish off the build, Woodson chose 18-inch Method 709-HD wheels wrapped in Toyo Open Country R/T Trail tires, giving the truck an aggressive stance that's equally at home on the highway, job site, or trail.
